Light is an essential part of Lyon\u2019s unique identity. Even a brief stroll through the city during night-time will reveal how light has been organically fused into Lyon\u2019s cityscape transforming it into a significant center of urban lighting and light design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, it comes as no surprise that Lyon annually hosts one of the most extravagant international events of the city, the Festival of Lights (F\u00eate des Lumi\u00e8res)<\/a><\/strong>, creating one-of-a-kind settings, fascinating soundscapes and poetic dreamscapes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival of Lights was born on December 8, 1852, despite the social unrest, recurring floods and other radical changes that were happening. The citizens of Lyon put candles in colored glasses on their window sills in order to celebrate the inauguration of the Virgin Mary\u2019s statue on the Fourvi\u00e8re Hill. As a result, whole neighborhoods of the city were lit up turning buildings into stages for light shows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From then on, to honor this event, every year during the days approaching December 8 the residents of Lyon celebrate the lighting up of their city via temporary light installations expanding over 4 evenings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architects, graphic artists, designers, videographers, plastic artists, street-show companies metamorphosize the city into an exciting gallery of their temporary art pieces.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just imagine how popular the festival is with around 3 million people attending it every year! <\/p>\n\n\n
